Manx Natural History: Macro Photography Workshop

Type:Show / Display

Manx Natural History: Macro Photography Workshop

About

There are two sessions available either: Session 1 – 9:30 to 12:30 or; Session 2 – 13:30 to 16:30

●The Natural History Collection: A brief introduction by Laura McCoy, Curator: Natural History, on the importance and preservation of these archived specimens.
● Macro Photography Masterclass: A presentation by Adam Morgan, Biosphere Photographer in Residence, on the technical process of macro shooting—focusing on camera settings, lighting, and composition techniques.
● Practical Studio Time: Spend the majority of the session behind your camera. You will cycle through various "stations," giving you dedicated time to photograph butterflies, beetles, moths, bats, and shrews, alongside other fascinating specimens.
● Technical Demonstration: See the professional process in action with a live demonstration of focus-stacking and editing, showing you how to transform raw shots into high-impact natural history portraits.

Throughout the session, Adam will be roaming the room to offer 1-on-1 guidance, troubleshooting settings, and helping you refine your technique. The workshop will conclude with an opportunity to share work and exchange contact info to stay connected with fellow photographers.

Equipment Requirements (Please Read Carefully):
This workshop is designed for DSLR or Mirrorless camera users and is not suitable for phone photography.
● Manual Control: Your camera must have full manual settings.
● Lenses: Please bring a macro lens if you can. Otherwise, bring a lens capable of manual focus.
● Tripod: Highly recommended; please bring your own if possible.
● Loaner Gear: We will have three macro-capable camera setups, plus a limited number of tripods and flashes (Canon/Sony compatible), available for participants to trial.

Suitability & Age Range:

This workshop is aimed at adults and keen young photographers aged 12 and over. Please note that all under-16s must be accompanied by a ticket-holding adult. The session requires a level of patience and care due to the fragile nature of the museum specimens.

About the Residency:
This workshop is hosted in partnership with UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man and Manx Wildlife Trust, and is proudly sponsored by Visit Isle of Man.
Adam Morgan and Ciara Kaneen are the current Biosphere Photographers in Residence. Their role is to document the nature and culture of our Biosphere—from the wider Manx landscape and local heritage to the smallest inhabitants of the Island. This residency is a journey of discovery for the photographers as well as the public, and this workshop is a key part of sharing that learning process.

Follow them for more details on their upcoming Biosphere Photographer in Residence Exhibition opening on 1st March 2026.
