About
Set in 92 acres of countryside just outside Douglas, the Home of Rest for Old Horses is a tranquil sanctuary for elderly horses, including retired trammers from the Douglas Horse Trams, as well as ponies and donkeys. Founded in 1950, it is volunteer-run and supported entirely by generous contributions made to the home.
There are over 60 horses and donkeys, all of whom are not shy and they will come right up to the fence so you can easily stroke them and feed them. They may seem big in size with even bigger personalities, but the horses are very placid and gentle so it is suitable for children and adults alike. They enjoy eating carrots and apples, or alternatively you can purchase a bag of horse feed from the gift shop.
The home is set in a large section of fields with picturesque views so you can have a rest on one of the many benches and take in the excellent views of the surrounding countryside and Douglas below while you visit. You will also find a wide selection of drinks or delicious food from the cafe and enjoy the history of the home in the special Museum building, as well as perusing the unique gift shop for the perfect souvenir. The home also has a function room that provides a unique venue suitable for all occasions, parties and events.
Entry is free but donations are gratefully accepted and for £10, you can also adopt any horse or donkey and receive regular updates on them throughout the year!
