Laxey Wheel Hard Hat Tours: Rods and Rockers

Type:Cultural

Laxey Wheel Hard Hat Tours: Rods and Rockers

About

Join Manx National Heritage at the Great Laxey Wheel for a behind the scenes look at the second phase of essential conservation repairs. Led by specialist contractors CCJ Group, pull on your safety gear, climb the scaffolding and discover the work taking place on the splendid rod duct, T-Rocker and bogies!

Building on the success of the award winning Phase 1 Laxey Wheel conservation project, Phase 2 will fix the broken rod mechanism and re-connect it to the Lady Isabella. This will smooth and balance the operation of the wheel and put less stress on Lady Isabella for years to come.

More than 250 litres of lime wash will be applied to the rod duct after repointing in traditional lime mortar. And when works are complete at the end of the summer scaffolding will be removed to reveal the splendour of one of our most popular heritage sites.

Please note: the tour will involve some walking around an open air work site, with uneven pathways and stairs. Safety footwear or walking boots must be worn, the contractor reserves the right to decline entry if suitable footwear is not worn. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
