Visiting the Isle of Man - key things to know

Axnfell Forest

Type:Forest

Axnfell Forest

About

Axnfell is on the steep north facing slopes of Glen Roy. It has an area of 36 hectares. It was planted in the years 1951, 1967 and 1985, the main species of trees being Japanese Larch and Sitka Spruce. The car park at its entrance has an excellent picnic site overlooking Glen Roy and Baldhoon, and views stretch right up to Windy Corner on the TT course. Access for timber extraction within the plantation is poor resulting in the non thinning of trees on the lower slopes; however it is hoped that in the future the lower slopes may be further converted to broadleaved trees.

Dark Sky Site

Axnfell Forest is also a registered Dark Skies Site. An interpretion board will allow visitors to enjoy the stunning stargazing on offer.

The Island is ideally placed to see the magnificent sight of the Northern Lights on many occasions. The Northern lights are normally only seen from Northerly locations such as Alaska, Norway and Iceland, however the crystal clear Northern horizon from the Islands North eastern coast means this fascinating phenomenon can often be seen from the Island. The Manx Night sky is an amazing experience that will astound even the most experienced stargazer.

Home to currently 26 of the British Isles Dark sky discovery sites, the Isle of Man has some of the darkest skies in Europe.
