About

Rose Cottage is a charming detached 17th century Manx stone cottage situated at South Cape, Laxey, less than 5 minutes walk down steps to the beach and harbour, and only a few yards from the South Cape Manx Electric Railway stop. It has been carefully modernised to a very high standard to give 21st century comfort while still retaining its 17th century character.

Originally two stone cottages that were among the first houses on the South Cape, it is now one large holiday unit. The ground floor contains an entrance porch, two luxuriously carpeted lounges, 20ft by 12ft and 15ft by 12ft, containing dining area, lounge area with satellite digital colour television and DVD/CD player, second general lounge with piano and small snooker table. A modern kitchen with electric hob and fan oven under, microwave, dishwasher, fridge and large worktops, and a utility room with freezer, washing machine and separate tumble dryer complete this floor.

The first floor is fully carpeted, and contains a large double bedroom, a smaller double bedroom, a single bedroom, a boiler room, and a bathroom. The bathroom contains a W.C., wash basin and a bath with shower over. All beds are covered by 'All seasons' combination duvets. Bed linen and clean towels are provided.

Unlimited supplies of hot water are available from a gas fired Vailant boiler, which also powers the central heating, which has individually controllable radiators in all rooms.

Cutlery and crockery are provided for six people. There is a plentiful supply of toilet rolls and general cleaning materials.

The exterior has a large garden laid mainly to grass with a patio area and garden furniture overlooking the beach. Parking is available for two cars, one either side of the porch. In addition, there is space at the side of the house for a small car or a number of motorcycles. A telephone is installed which will accept incoming calls and allow outgoing emergency and telecom enquiry calls.

Note that being very old, some ground floor parts of the cottage has limited headroom. The clearance to the beams in the kitchen and the utility room is less than 6 ft in places and the height of the back door and the door between the main lounge and the kitchen is less still.

To maintain the high standard of interior furnishings, it is regretted that pets cannot be accepted.

Map & Directions

Road Directions

Take the A2 from Douglas to Laxey. As you enter Laxey, you will pass the 'Welcome to Laxey' signs. Soon after, you will drive past the Fairy Cottage filling station, which is on the right. Continue driving past the first turning on the right hand side. This road is called Old Laxey Hill - it has 20 mph signs and brown tourist signs on the entrance. Turn off the main road, taking the next right approx. 300 yds after Old Laxey Hill. This road is called Old School Hill. The entrance is very narrow, and is a single-track road. It has a triangular warning sign with the symbol of a tram, on the left side of the entrance, and the road name clearly displayed, on the right side of the entrance. Cross over the tramlines, with care, listening for the whistle of any approaching trams. Rose Cottage is the second house on the left hand side, after the tram lines. It is painted white, and fronts immediately onto the road. There is a parking bay on the left side of the porch.
