The Silverburn begins its journey above the village of St Marks, passing through Ballasalla before entering the sea at Castletown Harbour.  Sea trout and salmon do run in it, but it is predominantly a trout stream.

The main public access fishing on this river is the stretch of more than 1.5 km which lies within the Silverdale National Glen. The river can be accessed at Silverdale Glen recreational area where the boating pool, café and public toilets are located.  Free parking can be found on the main Foxdale Rd (SC 274 710); walk down the path towards the Glen.  The upper reaches of the river through the glen offer great sport for wild brown trout.  A mile downstream the river passes beneath Monk's Bridge and on towards the Manx National Heritage site of Rushen Abbey. Free parking is available close to the Monk’s Bridge (SC 278 703); access is from the A5 road in the village of Ballasalla.
