Welcome to our Biosphere Island…
Here in the Isle of Man, we cherish what we have and safeguard it for the future by making good decisions, as individuals, as organisations and as an Island. There was a reason we became the first entire nation to become a UNESCO Biosphere region back in 2016. The Island is unique, both in its rich flora and fauna but also its culture, heritage and, importantly, its close-knit community.
The Isle of Man really is an incredible place for people and nature.
What does it mean to be a UNESCO Biosphere Region?
In a nutshell, UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man is all about keeping the Island a special place to live, work and visit; to show residents and visitors that we’re an extraordinary place and are dedicated to keeping it that way.
As an Island we can demonstrate a balanced relationship between our people and nature, promoting this and helping our community to care about and understand the importance of protecting the natural world for a sustainable future.
As a visitor, what does it mean for me?
As a visitor, it means you are visiting a truly extraordinary Island. One that cares about its natural environment, is proud of its heritage, is home to a vibrant community and has a resilient economy.
With such a prestigious award comes the promise of beautiful scenery and masses of marine life, birdlife and wildlife, all of which can be enjoyed across the Island’s landscapes year-round.
Being a UNESCO Biosphere region is not just about nature and wildlife. It’s also about how we, as an Island, view and value our culture and heritage. 10,000 years of fascinating Manx history is just waiting to be discovered.
We are extremely proud to be recognised for our commitment to our people, our culture and our natural environment and we welcome you to discover the Island’s undeniable tranquillity and beauty.
