The Isle of Man, the birthplace of Pilates, will attempt to break the world record for the largest single Pilates class this summer, on the very ground where Joseph Pilates first developed his method over 100 years ago.

On 19 July 2026, thousands are expected to gather at Knockaloe for a landmark wellness festival and official world record attempt, celebrating the Island’s pivotal role in the origins of Pilates.

During the First World War, Joseph Pilates was interned at Knockaloe Camp on the Isle of Man, where he began shaping the foundations of his exercise system. Inspired in part by the agility and fluid movement of the Island’s native Manx cats, he refined a series of controlled exercises that he shared with fellow detainees - principles that would later become the Pilates method.

The event, taking place at Knockaloe near Peel, will serve as a global homecoming for the international Pilates community, reconnecting the method with its Manx roots while aiming to surpass the current world record of 3,486 participants in a single class.

Led by leading Pilates instructors from around the world, the mass participation class is designed to be inclusive and accessible, welcoming beginners and experienced practitioners of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to move together in one shared space.

Alongside the class, a Wellness Festival and Charity Village will host a programme of physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing experiences. The Village will bring together local Manx food and drink producers, craftspeople, wellness businesses, and local charities, reflecting the Isle of Man’s status as the world’s first whole-nation UNESCO Biosphere and its strong culture of community and sustainable living.

Deborah Heather, CEO of Visit Isle of Man, said:

“We are incredibly proud to support this landmark event, which beautifully reflects what makes the Isle of Man such an extraordinary place to visit. Our Island’s story, its landscapes, its people, and its heritage create a powerful foundation for meaningful, wellness-driven experiences like this. To welcome a global Pilates homecoming to the very place where it was first conceived is both deeply symbolic and wonderfully inspiring. It aligns perfectly with our long-term vision to grow a visitor economy rooted in authenticity, wellbeing, and our UNESCO Biosphere values. We look forward to sharing the Island’s spirit of community, creativity, and connection with participants from near and far.”

Joanna Crookall, CEO of Ramsey Crookall, said:

“As we mark 80 years of Ramsey Crookall on the Isle of Man, we’re delighted to be organising this event on the Island. Bringing a global wellness community together at Knockaloe, a place of such historical significance, feels both meaningful and inspiring. As a Manx family business, supporting initiatives that promote wellbeing, connection and positive experiences on the Island is something we genuinely care about, and this event reflects that commitment.”

Ruby Griffiths, Founder of 34Moves, said:

“I feel so proud to be one of the organisers of this world record attempt and wellness event. Having dedicated my life to studying the human mind and movement, it feels very special to honour the Pilates method in the location where it was first shaped. Through 34Moves, everything we do is grounded in a simple belief: wherever you are in life, there is always something you can do to support your body and mind. Through this festival, we hope to create an experience that supports overall well-being by connecting all attendees with wellness-related initiatives. Working alongside partners with such a strong heritage, including Ramsey Crookall and Visit Isle of Man, adds real depth to this moment, and we are proud to be developing the event together."
