The East

The East

We've put together a whistle-stop tour of the Island's east coast for you and your loved ones to enjoy this Autumn and Winter.

This itinerary can be enjoyed by all age ranges, and includes some of the best attractions, activities and eateries from east side!

The East

Stop 1 - Great Laxey Mines Railway

Ant & Bee ready for #duckrace#petersrailway.

A post shared by Great Laxey Mine Railway (@glmr_laxey) on

This restored railway located at the Valley Gardens, runs along the surface section of the tramway which once carried lead and zinc ores from deep inside the Great Laxey Mine.

Travel in unique style - in a tiny carriage, hauled by a replica of one of the original steam engines through the Island's only railway tunnel!

No other railway can boast of a waterwheel at each end - with the Snaefell Mine waterwheel located at the Valley Gardens entrance, and the famous Laxey Wheel at the end point.

Stop 2 - Laxey Pavillion and Glen

Laxey Glen is a popular spot for families of all ages with its playground and grassed paddocks. Explore the criss-cross woodland path, or picnic on the beautiful lawns. Traces of the glens’s historic past are hiding around every corner, which is rich in mature exotic trees and natural woodland - making for a wonderful walk. Why not finish off your walk with breakfast, lunch or dinner at the newly refurbished Laxey Glen cafe, bar & bistro?

Stop 3 - Laxey Beach and The Shed

Breakfast by the beach #theshed #laxeybeach

A post shared by Betty Rose (@littlemissbettyrose) on

The picturesque Laxey beach, bordered by cliffs to the south and by the harbour breakwaters to the north, is the perfect place to reflect and soak up some winter rays. A lovely spot to enjoy a coffee while looking out to sea, there is the beachfront cafe, and The Shed, the quirky, cosy, artisan beachside eatery on the far end of the Promenade, serving fresh local food, great coffee, a range of homemade cakes as well as homemade natural, raw coldpressed vegetable and fruit juices.

Final Stop - Laxey Woollen Mills

Still a working mill, quality woollen cloth continues to be woven, six days a week, on the two pedal looms within the mill shop - browse as you watch the masters weave their magic! If you fancy some additional culture, head upstairs to the Hodgson Loom Art Gallery, which hosts monthly exhibitions by an array of artists living and working on the Isle of Man.
