Whilst you are exploring our beautiful Island, the message is simple: please respect the Manx countryside, stay on the right track, ride responsibly, and only use marked green lanes and greenway roads. A detailed 1:25,000 Outdoor Leisure Map, which shows footpaths, areas open for ramblage, and points of scenic, natural, and historical interest, is available from the Welcome Centre located at the Sea Terminal as well as local bookshops.
The temporary green lane closures highlighted on the map apply during the TT period. A digital version of the Green Lane Map showing the TT Course byways and green lanes is available for download here.
Green lanes and greenway roads are both types of unsurfaced highways that usually traverse rural areas; the latter has a 500 kg weight limit. In addition to pedestrian, equine, and bicycle users, insured and road‑registered off‑road vehicles such as motorbikes, ATVs, and 4x4s can also access these highways.
Please enjoy the Island’s countryside while you’re here, but also remember the following:
-
It is an offence to ride or drive motor vehicles in the uplands, woodlands, or on beaches without permission.
-
It is an offence to drive or ride a motorised vehicle anywhere other than a highway; this includes all upland areas, woodlands, beaches, the Ayres National Nature Reserve, and the Peel to Douglas Heritage Trail.
-
Stay on the right track. We aim to protect heathland and tracts of peat lying adjacent to many of the routes, which can become damaged and eroded when people ride wide of the proper track.
-
This is a particularly sensitive time of year for wildlife, especially ground‑nesting birds. It is an offence to disturb these birds. Sheep will also be lambing at this time, so please take care not to disturb them.
