Fire Safety Guidance

Tourism providers on the Isle of Man must comply with legal standards of fire regulations to ensure a safe environment for both the proprietors and the guests.

The Fire Precautions Act 1975 (FP Act 75) covers Licensed Premises, Hotels, Boarding Houses and Entertainment Premises. These properties are generally issued with a fire certificate. If you are planning to operate this type of business, please contact the Fire Safety Team to discuss.

There are a number of useful guidance documents on the Fire and Rescue Service website, which we would urge you to read if you are offering any type of visitor attraction, activity, accommodation event or eatery.

Fire Risk Assessment

The fire risk assessment is written to comply with the fire safety standards agreed between the Department for Enterprise and the IOM Fire and Rescue Service. The purpose being to identify the key measures needed to safeguard the safety of employees, guests and other persons who may be affected in case of fire.

The assessment identifies potential fire hazards and risks as well as activities that may cause fires at the property. It also includes details on evacuation procedures and firefighting equipment. It is suitable for all types of tourism provider. The assessment should be undertaken by the owner or employer in most cases.

The requirement to carry out a fire risk assessment comes under the H&S Management Regulations 2003. Isle of Man tourism requires all new tourism providers to complete a Fire Risk Assessment upon registration with the Department. It is encouraged for a Fire Risk Assessment to be completed on a regular basis to ensure visitor safety.

Completion of the Fire Risk Assessment may not completely satisfy the requirements of Fire Safety Legislation on the Isle of Man (The Fire Precautions Act 1975) if you are unsure you should contact the Fire Safety Department on +44 (0)1624 647303 for further advice.
