Day Trip on the Manx Electric Railway

Day Trip on the Manx Electric Railway

The Isle of Man has some of the best heritage railways in the world, each one immaculately preserved so every journey takes you back to bygone times. Jump onboard the open carriage of the Manx Electric Railway for one of the most scenic stretches of rail lines in the British Isles. With 17.5 miles of track and numerous stops along route, pass by leafy glens, gorse topped hills and spectacular coast while stopping to discover the distinct East coast of the Isle of Man.

Laxey

If you choose to alight at the traditional fishing and mining village of Laxey, there’s plenty here to keep you occupied including Laxey Woollen Mills, King Orry’s Grave and the Great Laxey Wheel, the largest working waterwheel in the world.

The Lady Isabella as she is also known, is a feat of Victorian engineering and ingenuity, serving the mine for 70 years and later becoming the Island’s most dramatic tourist attraction. Watch the mighty wheel turn and climb the 95 steps to the top.

If you prefer to travel onwards and upwards, 2,036 feet above sea level to be precise, then take the high railroad on the Snaefell Mountain Railway where you can gaze out and enjoy panoramic views of the seven kingdoms; England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Heaven, Mann and the Sea.

Dhoon Glen

Alight at Dhoon Glen Halt, to explore one of the Island’s most dramatic glens and waterfalls, known for its natural and rugged beauty. Nestled within a steep-sided valley, the entrance to an isolated cove can be found, the cove of Dhoon Bay. Dhoon Bay, with its amazing rock formations, pebble beach and solitude makes it a perfect destination to explore, relax or even enjoy a peaceful picnic, listening to the sounds of the sea.

Ramsey

Continue north to Ramsey, where the MER line terminates. Explore the impressive working harbour, before taking a walk along the Victorian Queen’s Pier, overlooking the golden, sandy beach. Be sure to visit Mooragh Park, one of the Island’s best recreational spaces, boasting excellent leisure facilities for visitors of all ages.
