Food and dining are some of the most shared and top-performing content on social media. Facebook and Instagram are the main sources, with images shared by friends inspiring diners to try places for themselves.

It is highly recommended to regularly share images to Facebook and Instagram to entice new and returning custom. This can either be new images, or by re-sharing user generated content. With the latter, give the appropriate photo credit to engage guests and encourage others to share their images.  Keep in mind that most diners will be viewing the images on a mobile device, so keep descriptions short.

Some tips for posting images on social media:

  • Aim for posts that are mostly image, with limited text. Use good quality images, short videos (less thank 30 seconds), and keep descriptions under 70 characters to avoid truncation on mobile devices.

  • Images must serve a purpose, whether to educate and inform guests, inspire an emotion, or entertain people with laughter and a surprise. Consider giving a glimpse of 'behind the scenes'

  • Make use of hashtags - particularly in Instagram. Some examples are #Food, #Foodporn, #Foodie, #Instafood, #Foodstagram, #Foodpics, #Yummy, #Delicious, #Foodlover

  • Share news, menu updates and feedback from customers

  • When taking photos, use a professional if possible. If this isn't available, remember good lighting, aim for bright clear and crisp imagery.
