Southern Cliffs Coastal Hike

About

This wonderful walk starts at the heritage folk village of Cregneash. The village gives a unique insight into 19th century life of the Manx crofters and the white-washed cottages of the famous Harry Kelly. We stroll through the village and head uphill to the spectacular site of the chasms.  The beautiful rock structure with vertical cracks in the rock face and sheer drops to the sea is a must see.  A stop is made to admire the natural rock structure and the amazing array of bird life, many of them unique to the island.

We then continue a nice easy walk along the cliff tops following the island’s coastal footpath towards the top of Black Head and Spanish Head. Spanish Head is so named because a galleon from the Spanish Armada was reputed to have been wrecked here.  We then start a short steep descent towards the Sound overlooking the Calf of Man.

Here, we spend some time in the area to admire the bird sanctuary of the Calf, and listen to the haunting call of the local seal population basking in their natural environment. You will have the opportunity to enjoy some local baking in the café situated which allows you the perfect location in which to gaze out over the Calf of Man where many of the migrating birds stop off for a rest on their journey to or from warmer climates.
