About
Malew Church is a traditional Manx church that has continued to grow and develop over the years. Located next to the Great Meadow, the church is a bright and welcoming building that has wonderful views of the surrounding countryside, down to Castletown and out to sea.
The church is a tranquil building within which you will find beautiful stained glass windows, early religious artefacts and various pieces of art by local artists, including a ceramic and fused glass bowl for the font by local artist Coleen Corlett. Outside, Kirk Malew Church has one of the largest church yards in the island, leading it to become known as 'the Westminster Abbey of the Isle of Man' as it has archives and memorials that attract attention from all corners of the world. These include the ancient Malew Celtic crosses, extensive family histories, and many memorials to famous Manx families, including the Manx hero Illiam Dhone. The Church has also recently installed a new memorial to commemorate those lost in the World Wars.
During the Pre-TT Races in June and the Southern 100 in July, Malew Church also provides a spectacular vantage point known as the 'Church Bends' where visitors can get an up-close view of the riders as they make their way around the 'S' bend at hair-raising speeds.
The building is open from 9:30 until dusk everyday (except when during extreme weather).
The Church also has a basic hospitality tray which provides self-serve coffee, tea & biscuits, and walkers are very welcome to eat their packed lunches inside.
There is a guide book to the building on sale written by a local historian, and there is also a free 8 page booklet highlighting 12 features of the building as a self guided trail around Kirk Malew, so you can explore the history of the building and its hidden secrets.
The building is generally left unattended but everyone is welcome to help themselves – though the reverend and wardens also very happy to meet visitors and show them around, whether that is a quick 15 minute tour, or a longer detailed exploration of the site.
