Isle of Man Cruising
Cruising to the Isle of Man
The enchanted kingdom of Mann, a mystical Island located at the geographical centre of the British Isles in the middle of the Irish Sea, provides the ideal mid-point cruise destination port.
The Island has much to offer as a cruise destination with quay-side mooring for vessels up to 120 metres in the main harbour located at Douglas the Island's capital.
Larger vessels are catered for offshore in the sheltered Douglas Bay anchorage which offers superb
views of the wide sweep of Douglas promenade and background hills. Passengers using tenders are able to disembark direct to jetty steps in the inner harbour. The Island's National Museum, the Manx Museum, is within walking distance of the harbour and has many unique exhibits covering Manx history in a comprehensive display of artefacts and art dating from Neolithic to the present day.
There are 3 good deep water anchorages to the East, West and South of the Island. Each anchorage has many attractions for passengers, most of these close to easy passenger landing facilities.
Douglas is the Government administrative centre and has well equipped fire, police and emergency services including a large hospital with facilities for handling helicopter medevac.
A superb anchorage is available at the west of the Island, off the Cathedral city of Peel. Tenders have easy access to the inner harbour. The area is rich in heritage displays. Places of interest include Peel Castle which overlooks the bay and housed in its own centre is the
replica Viking longboat which actually sailed to the Island from Norway in 1979 to celebrate the Island's millennium.
Special events can be arranged for visiting cruise passengers, including local shopkeepers in Victorian period costumes and the presentation of an illuminated certificate of honorary citizenship to passengers making landfall.
Situated at the South of the Island are the two fishing ports of Port St Mary and Port Erin each giving good anchorage and harbour landing facilities. Both ports are traditional Manx fishing harbours with a strong leisure yachting presence.
Cunard Ocean Liners Miniature Sheet
For 160 years the name Cunard has reigned supreme over the world's oceans and Isle of Man Post Office is delighted to present a miniature sheet of stamps to mark this momentous occasion.
Rarely has there been a more exciting time in the history of the Cunard company since Sir Samuel Cunard left Liverpool in 1840 bound for halifax, Nova Scotia and Boston aboard his paddle steamer RMS Britannia.
