Take a walk on the wild side and discover the hidden countryside in the heart of Ballaugh.
You will start at the Post Office and follow Cronk Road until you reach St Marys Church on the right. This will lead you onto the Brough Jairg which weaves across the countryside, providing views of the coast to one side and the mountain on the other. After passing over the stile at the end, follow Bollyn Road down to the path at the next left turn.
This path is the old railway line that dates back to the 1870s and since its closure in 1968, the route has become a lush green haven for plants and wildlife, particularly blackberries and wallabies.
Be sure to remember a container to collect the blackberries during the autumn months and bring your binoculars all year round to spot the wild wallabies that have roamed the Ballaugh countryside ever since a pair escaped from the nearby Wildlife Park in the 1970s.
Advice and Safety Information
Some areas of the route may be muddy. Care must be taken whilst walking along certain parts of the footpaths along route, as uneven terrain is a common feature. Whilst walking along the footpaths, please be farm aware and keep your dog on a lead when near livestock.
Leisurely - walks for reasonably fit people with at least a little country walking experience. The route will included some unsurfaced rural paths and tracks. Walking boots and suitable clothing are recommended
