Visiting the Isle of Man - key things to know

RNF 8: Jurby to Point of Ayre

Type:Walking Route

RNF 8: Jurby to Point of Ayre

About

Ordnance Survey Map: HERE

Grading: Leisurely
Distance: 13.5 km / 8.5 miles

Start: Sartfield Beach
Finish: Point of Ayre Lighthouse

This section of the Raad ny Foillan takes place almost entirely along a sand and shingle beach. Starting at Sartfield Beach you will continue along the shoreline towards the Point of Ayre. If the soft sand proves too hard going, there are many paths running parallel to the beach through the lichen heath.

This area of the Island is particularly rich in birdlife so special care should be taken not to cause disturbance during nesting season. Care should also be taken crossing the Llen Trench, especially near high tide, as currents can be strong.

Finish your day’s walk at the prominent lighthouse at the Point of Ayre, the most northerly tip of the Isle of Man.

Advice and Safety Information

Please check tide timetables before setting off as access is restricted at high tide. Walk suitable for a more active family due to the distance, however a smaller section of the route could be completed. The area surrounding the walk is rich in birdlife, care should be taken to avoid disturbing nesting birds from 1st April to 31st July. During this time we recommend you walk either next to the sea or on the adjacent heathland to avoid trampling legally protected eggs and chicks; dogs must be on leads when birds are nesting. Take care crossing the Lhen Trench, especially near high tide as the flow of water can be strong.

Leisurely - walks for reasonably fit people with at least a little country walking experience. The route will include un-surfaced rural paths and tracks. Walking boots and suitable clothing are recommended.
