The famous and much loved Gaiety was designed by the great British theatre architect Frank Matcham. It opened in 1900 and was painstakingly and faithfully restored between 1990 and 2000. Seating up to 800, the Gaiety hosts a year-round programme of drama, comedy, music, opera, variety and family entertainment - a combination of first-class productions by touring professional companies and local drama and musical theatre groups. A 90 minute guided tour shows you front of house, backstage and the amazing Victorian understage machinery which is in full working order.
