Peel to Port Erin

Peel to Port Erin (West Coast)
Distance: 13.75 miles/22km
Grade ‘A’ – difficult (experienced walkers)Walking
Allow 7 hours

This is an outstanding walk which demands a good deal of stamina as it involves three significant ascents including two from sea level. Walkers are rewarded throughout with coastal scenery of the highest order and will also take in the same countryside and coastal views that feature in a number of big screen movies such as Waking Ned, Keeping Mum and Stormbreaker. Remember too, to keep a look out for nosey seals and the awesome basking sharks in the surrounding waters. Take the number 5 or 6 bus to Peel from Douglas to the stop by the House of Manannan. Walk alongside the harbour to the bridge at the head of the harbour and walk towards the Castle. Follow the broad track up the hill and take the grassy track sharp left as the castle come into view. The walk is part of the ‘Raad Ny Foillan’ (the way of the gull) or coastal path around the island and is waymarked as such. Time permitting, break for lunch at Niarbyl and travel in style on the last steam train back to Douglas (departs Port Erin at 16.15 – follow signs from the Promenade when you reach the end of the walk).
